Legal Status Of Abortion Regulations By State

According to the Pew Research Center's survey, nearly six-in-ten adults (57 percent) disapprove of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe, including 43 percent who strongly disagree with the ruling. In contrast, around four in ten (41 percent) approve of the court's decision, and only 25 percent strongly support it.

Following the court's decision, laws restricting abortion were enacted, causing at least 12 states to ban most abortions. Additionally, two states have implemented laws banning abortions around six weeks into a pregnancy.

The fight over abortion rights is yet to be resolved in many states, with supporters filing lawsuits to stop laws that restrict abortion procedures from being enforced.

As of August 2022, approximately half of the states are expected to enact bans or other restrictions on abortion procedures, with the deadline for such bans being around six weeks into pregnancy, which most women miss because pregnancy takes more than six weeks to detect.

Around half of the states are expected to impose gestational limits on the procedure or enact bans on the same. In some of these states, abortion remains legal as courts determine whether existing or new bans can take effect. Meanwhile, abortion is legal in the rest of the states, but it may still be restricted, or access may be limited. Currently, three states allow abortions up to 15, 18, or 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Nine states have temporarily suspended the enforcement of anti-abortion laws, fighting in support of abortion rights. Thirteen states legalize abortion, while seven states legalize but limit it.
